What full-service commercial printing means

The term "commercial printer" covers a wide spectrum in Chicago. Quick-print franchises produce business cards and small-format flyers. Single-service shops focus on signage, or large format, or direct mail alone. Print brokers take orders and outsource production to whoever has open capacity that week. Full-service commercial printers handle the entire workflow themselves, in-house, from file preparation through delivery.
MidAmerican is full-service. Every step — prepress, proofing, plate-making, offset press, digital press, large format, bindery, mailing — happens in our Grand Avenue building. There is no third party, no outsourced step, no hand-off where the job leaves our control and color management. For complex multi-component work, that's the difference between a project that lands clean and one that shows up with mismatched color, misaligned timing, or pieces that don't quite fit together.

Core commercial printing services

Offset and litho printing

Conventional offset lithography is the most economical and color-accurate process for medium and high-volume runs. MidAmerican operates G7-certified offset presses with Staccato® screening for fine-detail reproduction and in-house plate systems. Typical applications: magazines, catalogs, annual reports, books, high-volume direct mail components, and brand collateral where color consistency across press runs is required.

Digital printing and variable data

Digital presses handle short runs, personalized variable-data work, and tight-turnaround jobs. Standard turnaround is 24 hours on most digital production, with no rush charges. Variable data printing — where every piece carries unique text, images, addresses, or offers — runs on the same equipment, which is what makes targeted direct mail and personalized customer communications economical at any scale.

Direct mail

MidAmerican is one of the larger direct mail producers in Chicago. We handle campaigns end-to-end: list management, NCOA address correction, variable data personalization, printing, presort, addressing, insertion, USPS coordination, and delivery — all in-house. Both regional Chicago campaigns and nationwide distributions are produced from the West Loop facility.

Mailing and fulfillment

Beyond direct mail itself, we operate a full mailing and fulfillment department: database formatting, postal presorting, ink-jet addressing, folding, insertion, kit assembly, warehousing, and pick-and-pack distribution. This is what makes single-vendor execution practical on multi-component campaigns and ongoing customer communication programs.

Bindery and finishing

In-house bindery operations cover saddle stitching, perfect binding, spiral and Wire-O, foil stamping, embossing, blind embossing, die-cutting, scoring, perforating, and custom hard-cover book binding. Catalog, magazine, and book projects go from press to finished, shipped product without leaving the building — and without color or registration changes introduced by a third-party finisher.

Large format printing

Banners, trade show graphics, posters, retractables, foamboards, backdrops, and signage produced on dedicated wide-format equipment. Large format is most often used alongside our other services — booth graphics produced with the printed programs and badges for the same event, for example — though we handle standalone large-format work as well. More on large format printing in Chicago.

Magazine and catalog printing

Soft-cover magazine and catalog production for publishers, retailers, and associations across Chicago and the Midwest. G7 color management ensures consistent color across the entire run and across reprints. In-house bindery handles saddle-stitched and perfect-bound formats.

Book printing

Soft-cover and hard-cover book production for publishers, authors, associations, and corporate clients. Custom hard-cover binding is handled in-house. Smaller runs use digital production for economy; larger runs use offset for cost-per-unit advantage.

Convention and trade show printing

Chicago hosts more major conventions than any other U.S. city, and convention printing is one of MidAmerican's specializations. Booth graphics, registration materials, programs, exhibitor catalogs, signage, banners, and last-minute reprints — produced and delivered directly to McCormick Place, Navy Pier, Rosemont Convention Center, Chicago Hilton, Hyatt Regency, and downtown hotels.

Why integration matters in commercial printing

The practical difference between a full-service commercial printer and a print broker or single-service shop: when a job has six components — programs, badges, signage, banners, mailed invitations, and registration kits — a broker coordinates six vendors and hopes the color matches. A single-service shop produces one component and lets you handle the rest. MidAmerican produces all six in the same building, on color-managed equipment, with one project manager and one accountable team.

This isn't a theoretical advantage. Convention exhibitors at McCormick Place, financial firms running quarterly investor mailings, magazine publishers running 6-issue annual cycles, and corporate marketing teams running multi-component campaigns all benefit from the same operational reality: one quote, one timeline, one color standard, one accountable team.

Frequently asked questions

What is commercial printing?

Commercial printing is the production of printed materials in volume for businesses and organizations, as distinct from consumer print services or in-house office printing. It encompasses offset and digital presses, direct mail, bindery and finishing, large format, and mailing and fulfillment. Full-service commercial printers handle the entire workflow from file preparation through delivery.

How is commercial printing different from a quick print shop?

Quick print shops focus on small-format, fast-turnaround consumer and small-business work — business cards, flyers, single-quantity color copies, basic finishing. Commercial printers handle higher-volume, more complex production: offset press runs in the thousands, multi-component campaigns, variable data, color-managed reproduction, and integrated bindery, mailing, and fulfillment. The equipment, color standards, and project management are categorically different.

What does a full-service commercial printer do?

A full-service commercial printer handles the entire production workflow under one roof: prepress and file preparation, color proofing, offset and digital press production, bindery and finishing, mailing and fulfillment, and delivery. Full-service is distinct from print brokerage, where work is outsourced across multiple vendors. MidAmerican is full-service, with all production in a single 45,000 sq ft West Loop facility.

Does MidAmerican offer offset and digital printing?

Yes. MidAmerican operates both conventional offset presses (for medium and high-volume work, magazines, catalogs, books, direct mail) and digital presses (for short runs, variable data, and tight turnarounds). The choice between processes depends on quantity, turnaround, and personalization needs.

What does G7 certification mean for a commercial printer?

G7 is the global standard for color management developed by Idealliance. A G7 Master Certified commercial printer has been independently audited to produce consistent, predictable color across press runs, devices, substrates, and reprints. For clients running multi-batch campaigns or matching corporate brand standards, G7 means a job printed today will match a reprint ordered six months from now.

Can MidAmerican handle high-volume direct mail?

Yes. Direct mail is one of MidAmerican's core services and one of the largest direct mail operations in Chicago. We handle campaigns end-to-end: list management, NCOA address correction, variable data printing, presort, addressing, insertion, USPS coordination, and delivery — all in-house.

Do you produce magazines, catalogs, and books?

Yes. Magazine printing, catalog printing, and soft-cover and hard-cover book production are core offerings. In-house bindery capabilities include saddle stitching, perfect binding, spiral and Wire-O, foil stamping, embossing, die-cutting, and custom hard-cover binding. Press-to-finished-product happens without leaving the building.

Where is MidAmerican located?

MidAmerican Printing Systems is located at 1716 W. Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL 60622, in Chicago's West Loop neighborhood. The 45,000-square-foot facility houses all production operations under one roof.

Are you an environmentally responsible commercial printer?

Yes. MidAmerican is FSC Chain-of-Custody certified, sourcing paper from suppliers practicing responsible forest management. We duplex internal documentation, recycle production waste, and continue to invest in lower-impact production practices.
